Getting started

An iPhone running iOS 17 or later and a MealGen AI account. MealGen AI accounts are separate from other apps, so create a new account even if you use a related app.

There are four tabs: Today for logging food and water and seeing today’s progress, Plan for your 7-day meal plan, Shop for the shopping list built from that plan, and Trends for nutrition statistics.

The person icon at the top right of Today, Plan, and Trends opens Account, where you’ll find your daily goals, units, Apple Health, and sign-out.

1. Create your account and open the verification link we email you.

2. Set your targets: Today → Goals, then choose Automatic or Custom.

3. Optionally connect Apple Health: Account → Connect Apple Health.

4. Choose foods to include or exclude: Plan → Food preferences. Then generate your first plan.

Account & sign-in

On the sign-in screen, tap Create an account. Enter your full name, email, and a password of at least 8 characters twice, then tap Create Account. We email you a verification link. Open it on your iPhone and it returns you to the app.

Check your spam or junk folder first. While you’re still on the Check Your Email screen, you can tap Resend Verification Email once every 60 seconds. If you’ve already left that screen, email support@mealgenai.app from the address you signed up with and we’ll help.

On the sign-in screen, tap Forgot password?, enter your email, and tap Send Reset Link. Open the link in the email, choose a new password, and then sign in to the app with it.

New accounts aren’t open yet. Nothing is wrong with your device or your details. Please check back soon.

Open Account and tap Sign Out. Your logged meals, water, and custom goals stay in your account. Your current meal plan and food preferences are stored only on this iPhone, so signing out removes them.

Email support@mealgenai.app from your account email with the subject “Delete my MealGen AI account”. See Support for details. Deleting your account doesn’t cancel a subscription. Cancel it in Apple’s subscription settings first.

Meal plans

Open the Plan tab and tap Generate meal plan, or Generate a new plan if you already have one. Generating plans is part of Premium.

Every plan covers seven days, each with breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and sometimes a snack. It’s built from your current goals and food preferences. While it’s being made you can keep using the app, and your existing plan stays available until the new one is ready.

On the Plan tab, tap Plan preferences (or Food preferences before your first plan), then Choose foods. Mark foods as Include or Exclude across Proteins, Vegetables, Carbs, and Oils, seasonings & extras. Use Find a food to search, or Add a custom food. Then tap Save preferences.

You can pick up to 25 foods to include and 25 to exclude in each category. Carbs and Oils, seasonings & extras share one limit, so together they allow 25 of each. Preferences are saved on this iPhone and apply to the next plan you generate.

Not yet. To change meals, adjust your food preferences and generate a new plan.

MealGen AI keeps your most recent plan on this iPhone. Generating a new plan replaces it.

Yes, there’s a weekly limit. If you reach it, the Plan tab tells you when you can generate again.

“Some meals could not be generated” means part of the plan is missing. Review it and generate a new plan if needed. “Some nutrition values are AI estimates” means ingredient data wasn’t available for some meals, so their nutrition is estimated.

Only once you log them. Tap a meal in your plan and use Log 1 Serving in Meal details, or go to Today → Log food → From plan.

Shopping list

Open the Shop tab, or tap Open shopping list on the Plan tab. The list adds up ingredients across all seven days of your current plan and groups them by aisle. “x3” means three recipes call for an item without giving an amount.

Tap the circle next to an item to move it to Checked Off. Checked-off items aren’t saved, so they may reset when you reopen the app. Tap Share to send the list as text to Messages, Notes, or anywhere else.

Logging food & water

On the Today tab, tap Log food. Choose Search foods, Barcode, AI label scan (Premium), or Manual entry. The Recent tab shows foods you’ve logged before, and From plan logs meals from your current plan.

Type at least two characters. Search US foods (USDA) or World foods (Open Food Facts). If nothing turns up in US foods, tap Try World foods. Pick a result, adjust the amount in servings or grams, choose the meal and date, and tap Log This Food.

Tap Barcode and take a photo with the barcode centered and well lit. You can also type the number under Enter a barcode and tap Look up barcode. If you see “No product found”, use food search or manual entry instead.

AI label scan is a Premium feature. Tap AI label scan, choose Camera or Library, and tap Scan Label. Photograph the label straight on. To combine several packaged items into one meal, tap Add Another Label, then Log This Meal.

On Today, tap an entry to change its servings and tap Save food, or touch and hold it for Edit and Delete. To see older entries, tap View food history for the last 30 days. Tap an entry there to edit it, or swipe left to delete it.

On Today, tap Log water, use a quick-add amount or enter your own, and tap Save water. In Water history, tap an entry to edit it or swipe to delete it. Set your daily water goal in Daily goals.

Yes. New food and water entries are saved and sync when you reconnect, and a banner shows how many changes are waiting. Your saved plan and shopping list work offline. Editing or deleting existing entries needs a connection.

Daily goals

Tap Goals on the Today tab, or Account → Daily goals. Choose Automatic to use weight-based goals from your latest Apple Health weight on this iPhone. Or choose Custom to enter calories, protein, carbs, fat, and fiber as whole numbers. Custom goals are saved to your account.

Under Daily hydration, set your water goal (2,000 mL by default). Then tap Save goals.

MealGen AI couldn’t find a recent weight in Apple Health. Connect Apple Health from Account and allow access to body weight, make sure Health has a recent weight entry, or switch to Custom and enter your goals.

Open Account and use the Units switch.

Apple Health & Trends

Open Account, tap Connect Apple Health, and choose which categories to allow. To change them later, open the Health app, tap your profile picture, then Apps → MealGen AI.

Reads: your body weight, used for automatic goals, plus dietary energy, protein, carbs, and fat, shown on the Trends tab.

Writes: calories, protein, carbs, and fat for food you log. Fiber and water aren’t synced. Edits and deletions in MealGen AI, and food logged while offline, aren’t sent to Health.

The “From Apple Health” card is kept apart from your MealGen AI logs so the same meal isn’t counted twice when it’s in both places.

Everyone sees today’s protein, fiber, calorie, and water intake, a macro breakdown, and the Apple Health card. Premium adds 7, 14, and 30-day history: daily calories, trends against the previous period, macro ratios, nutrition and hydration summaries, and consistency scores.

Premium & billing

Premium unlocks AI meal plan generation, AI nutrition label scanning, and full Trends history. Food search, barcode lookup, manual entry, water tracking, daily goals, and today’s stats are free.

Open Account and tap the row showing your plan status (“Free”), or tap a Premium feature such as Generate meal plan or Upgrade to Premium. Choose monthly or annual. Payment goes through your Apple Account, and the App Store shows the price before you confirm.

Sign in to your MealGen AI account, open Account, tap your plan status, and tap Restore Purchases. Use the same Apple Account you bought with. If you see “No MealGen AI purchase found on this Apple Account”, check which Apple Account is signed in under iPhone Settings → your name.

Subscriptions are managed by Apple. To cancel, go to iPhone Settings → your name → Subscriptions → MealGen AI. Deleting the app or your account doesn’t cancel it. Apple also handles refunds at reportaproblem.apple.com.

If you see this right after creating your account, your email probably isn’t verified yet. Open the verification link we sent you, then sign in again.

Troubleshooting

Go to iPhone Settings → MealGen AI and turn on Camera, or tap Open Settings when the app asks. You can also pick a label photo from your Library, type a barcode number, or use food search.

Your iPhone has lost its connection. You can keep viewing saved data and logging new food and water, which syncs when you reconnect. Generating plans and editing or deleting entries need a connection.

The food databases can be briefly unavailable. Try World foods if US foods is down, try again in a few minutes, or log the food with manual entry or a label scan.

Check your connection and try again. Your previous plan stays available. If it keeps failing, email support with the time it happened.

Sessions expire from time to time for security. Sign in again and your logged meals, water, and custom goals will be there.
